A good diet plan is to eat different types of lower-fat foods to get most of your needed nutrients. Your plan should include plenty of plant foods like whole-grain products, fruits, and vegetables. There should also be a modest amount of lean low-fat animal-based food. Non-whole grain types of food like white bread should be avoided as they don’t burn out fast. The fiber and additional nutrients in whole grain food versions are healthier than white versions.
People with diabetes should be very careful with low-fat diets. To rely on carbohydrate as the main source of energy can cause blood glucose levels to rise. There should be a balance of different portions of fat and carbohydrate. You may need to consult a dietician if you are not sure about how to plan your diet.
What are good and bad fats?
There are 2 types of fats, saturated and unsaturated. Unsaturated fats like fats found in avocados, nuts and oily fish are considered good. It is generally accepted that unsaturated fats are useful for us. Saturated fats are fats found in meat and dairy products and these are generally considered bad. There is another type, Hydrogenated fats, which is used for preservation and better taste. The hydrogenated fats are now found to be unsafe to the body.
